Wheel Size and Tire Change

I’ve got a 2011 Limited 4WD that has the stock 20” wheels on it. I was looking to go smaller on wheels, like 17”, and get a tire with similar diameter to the current but hoping the bigger sidewall and more affordable options to consider would be a multifacted benefit. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?

I have a 2014 explorer limited and needed sturdy snow tires for our New England winters. I bought 18" rims and Blizzak snow tires that enable me to be safe in the snow. They function fine and my tire dealer said it was ok to do. Those original low profile tires make deep snow driving here perilous even with 4wd. I've been doing this for the last 4 winters and very happy with my explorer's performance. The only pain in the neck is having a stack of tires in my garage all the time. But better off being safe
