2002 Eddie Bauer shocks

I have a 2002 Explorer Eddie Bauer V8 with 66,000 miles. It is starting to ride lousy. I brought it to my mechanic and he said the shocks are not leaking so they are okay. I disagree. Is there a good test for shocks? Seems to me that the age kills the shocks and they are probably dried out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...again it rides terrible. When I go over a bumpy road you can really feel it.
