Hi All,

My 2010 Ford Explorer we just bought occasionally has trouble shifting out of park. I've replaced the shift solenoid interlock circuit board, but the same problem exists. WIth center console cover removed, I can manually move the solenoid and shift out of park just fine, so I'm thinking it's the solenoid mechanism itself, and not the circuit board. But I can't seem to find a replacement solenoid, just the circuit board. Do I need to get this from a dealership? Could it be something else?

Thanks,

-Mike

On my 2017 I've noticed that if I try to shift before I hit the brake far enough that it won't go and have to make sure that the brake is depressed enough before a shift attempt. When it happens I have to release the shift lock button re-apply the brake and then shift. I've only had mine a couple months and don't know if this is normal, but it seems like a sequenced redundant interlock.
Welcome to the world of your car trying to out think you!

I have a 2018 police explorer , I replaced the shift interlock selenoid and now the key gets locked in the ignition. I can only take it out if I disconnect the battery. Had this ever happened to anyone? Solutions?

Could be something with the steering column or the key tumblers are worn. On some vehicles, the steering wheel has to be locked in position before removing the key.

This may or may not help all of you:
We have several 2010 Explorers in our fleet. I have replaced 4 shifter assemblies. There is a small metal pin that is pressed into the plastic shaft that is within the shifter stem. Over time, this pin gets loose and starts to come out preventing it from properly contacting a microswitch that activates the solenoid that releases the shift lock mechanism. I tried glue/sticky stuff, knurling the end of the pin, but nothing lasted very long. You can leave the bezel and cover off and just reach in and push the pin back in place from time to time, or just replace the whole assembly. Not terribly expensive, maybe $150 or so if I recall. Not too difficult to replace. I suggest marking the base before removal so you can position the new one without any or much adjustment.
Good Luck!
