Hi I'm new to this forum and I'm having trouble with my engine originally we thought it was the timing chain and turned out it was a tensioner that had broke so we replaced it put it back together and it seemed like it was out of time so we tried to put it back in time without the tool didn't work then we tried with the special tool and then we did a compression test. It shows that it didn't have compression so we pulled the heads to find out that the valves aren't bent. My dad tells me that it could be the piston rings which at that point is too much for me and my dad to do. So we decided to get a new engine. Pick and pull is the only place that has an affordable engine, but they will not allow us to do a compression test before we buy it. And I know if the car isn't wrecked then it would have an engine issue.is there a way that I can find out if, say the tranny was bad? Or something else because there no where in the bay area that has that exact truck or engine for a decent price any help is very appreciated. (Please respond with helpful info, not telling me to junk it and get a Honda I can't afford it) btw it's a 2001 ford explorer 4.0 sohc v6 xlt 4wd and if you can tell me another reason to why I'm getting no compression if the valves aren't bent would be helpful too thank you

I just rebuilt a 4.0L SOHC out of an '06 Explorer.

I've worked on many engines but this design is the worst.

If the valves aren't bent, the cam could be out of time. Did you liquid test the valves to check for leaks or just an eyeball? Timing requires special tools as there are no keyways on the cams for timing. It's all about the angle and the way the tools are held during tightening. It's the most asinine design ever.
