Roof Rack Weight Limitations

Hello, I have a 2017 Explorer Platinum with Sunroof/Moonroof.

The owners manual states: The maximum recommended load, evenly distributed on the crossbars, is:
• 100 lb (45 kg) for vehicles without a moonroof.
• 45 lb (20 kg) for vehicles with a moonroof.

45lb would not allow me to carry very much in a cargo box during road trips. Is the weight limit due to the structural integrity of the roof with moonroof? Or perhaps its the crossbar wight limitation?

Does anyone know fo any other options for carrying more load in a Cargo box?

Maybe one of those hitch cargo things on the back too?

Do the 45 lb (20 kg) is before you install the rack or total load ON the rack??
Roof Rack Weight Limits

By design US auto roofs must be able to support 1.5x the weight of the car.

You can buy aftermarket bars for $300-400. I just removed the factory cross bars and U-bolted some aero-alum bars to the front/back supports and loaded my rooftop tent on it. Cost about $40.
